Velvet Freeze: Reviews & Ratings
My wife grew up in STL and raved about the Velvet Freeze Gold Coast Chocolate. She thought Velvet Freeze was gone forever. I found that there was one store still open and surprised her and her family by sneaking out and picking up a bunch and brought it home. All agreed it was exactly as good as they remembered. They had not had velvet freeze in close to 40 years. Truly a rare gem in St. Louis, and a must go for anyone.
An old school ice cream shop but not really worth it with the rude service... but if you can stomach rudeness from the owners I guess it’s worth the trip. The 5 stars is for the ice cream…not the service. This place doubles as a convenience store for the neighborhood, but I wouldn’t trust buying any of the food here as it looks super unorganized, and I would bet many of it would be expired, especially the candy The owner (lady sitting down in a chair) offered to sell me the store, she says that she has owned it for many years, but I won’t be back. Her rude attitude was a big turn off. The ice cream is great but not worth another trip unless I’m in the area.
Have had this ice cream(swiss chocolate my fav)since their first store in Hanley Hills. Growing up after school walking there for after school 1 scoop on cone..17cents then to 26 cents..late 1960s. Best homemade ice cream around!!

Velvet Freeze stands as a cherished ice cream landmark in St. Louis, nestled at 7355 W Florissant Ave. This old-school ice cream shop carries decades of rich history, with loyal patrons like Sandi Kloepfer recalling sweet afternoons spent savoring Swiss chocolate scoops for mere cents back in the late 1960s. Its homemade ice cream remains a standout, crafted with time-honored recipes that deliver deep, creamy flavors that evoke nostalgia with every bite.
The famed Gold Coast Chocolate flavor, as highlighted by Alex Drozd, showcases the brand's enduring appeal. For families who thought this treat was lost to time, rediscovering Velvet Freeze feels like finding a rare gem—its flavors unchanged, steadfast in quality after nearly forty years. This kind of consistency speaks volumes about their commitment to authentic ice cream craftsmanship.
Yet, Velvet Freeze offers more than just ice cream; it doubles as a neighborhood convenience store, reflecting its deep roots in the local community. While some visitors note the shop’s unpolished service and somewhat cluttered store layout, the ice cream itself is what truly defines the experience. The trade-off between the staff’s brusqueness and the quality of the frozen treats seems to be a recurring theme, underscoring the passion behind the product if not the hospitality.
Tasting Velvet Freeze ice cream is like stepping back into a simpler era, where rich, velvety textures and genuine flavors create lasting memories. If you find yourself in St. Louis, this spot is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic, homemade ice cream that carries a powerful legacy of local tradition and sweet indulgence.
